Since May 15th 2011 the Placa de Catalunya in Barcelona is the territory of many protesters protesting against the budget costs of the national government and the undemocratic nature of the Parliament. The square is transformed in a tent city within the city.

?Democracia Real YA! stand for "Real democracy now!" Especially at night it's very busy, when the lengthy asamblea's are held in which decisions on about most everything are taken or not. Full democracy requires some patience.
In their statement they state: "We the unemployed, poorly paid contract workers, the precarious, young people ... we want a change and a better future. We are tired of antisocial reforms. We acknowledge the political and economic truth of our precarious situation and demand a change of course."

On Wednesday it was finally decided to break up the camp, on June 19th. However before this decision was taken, there was much debate among the protesters. And of course another lengthy asamblea was held. Her you see the speaker reading out loud the results of the vote. But as you can see, one person in the crowd want the attention of the speaker for the in-depth debate on the way the votes were cast...So, it proved to be a long night... again!!

?Democracia Real YA! stand for "Real democracy now!" Especially at night it's very busy, when the lengthy asamblea's are held in which decisions on about most everything are taken or not. Full democracy requires some patience and a lot of negotiations.

Just past 3 o'clock in the morning many protesters felt the wear and tear of the extensive debates and countless amendments and draft resolutions, which were presented at the assemble that night. But they were not the only one's. Even though many friends consider me an 'night owl', I was becoming exhausted too. It was getting harder to focus, holding still during hand-held timed shots and make good-quality compositions.

This was the last sensible shot I made that early morning. Enjoy it while it lasts, because I'm still in doubt if its good enough for my stream.

A Bike tour From Portland (Troutdale) to Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. Eleven days of riding 530 miles (plus 40 miles of hitching). The return was made on the Empire Builder Amtrak train at Sandpoint, ID.

For the tour Matt and Carye bought new custom built Bike Friday (www.bikefriday.com) folding bikes that are made in Eugene, Oregon. Neither Carye or Matt own cars, so investing in a reliable, flexible bike for travel was important. However the bikes arrived two days before leaving, so getting used to new bikes while on the road, was literally a pain in the butt! By the end of the trip, gears, seat and handle bar placement, and proper riding shoes were figured out. Everyday of the ride had awesome weather (not too hot, not rainy), and Carye and Matt met many friendly people, ate as much pizza and icecream as desired, and enjoyed some beautiful scenery (though Washington wheat fields get dull to the eyes after 20 miles). The fourth day brought bad luck - 4 flats (at once!) caused by Goathead thorns, and wind in the face most the day. Also a family of earwigs hitched a ride in C & M's camping gear, and it took about a week to finally see the last one. Idaho is a cyclist paradise (what a secret). From The State Border near Coere D'Alene to just before Bonner's Ferry, there were many bike paths, nice scenery, and most flat routes.

Day 1:Troutdale to Hood River (55.6 miles)
Highlights: Gorgeous Columbia River (Get the bike map from ODOT). Ride to Council Crest, Ride by Falls, bike-ped paths on the old historic highway.

The campground listed on the bike map for Hood River was not there. We decided to treat ourselves and stayed at the Hood River downtown hotel. Hood River is a super nice town - though sad the Carousel Art Museum is closed and moving elsewhere. Also on this route, between Cascade Locks and Wyeth, do not take the Wyeth Bench Rd (aka Herman Creek Rd), it is a horrible grade hill, and you are better off taking the I-84. Note about I-84, it's not the most pleasant experience, but it's not bad, In order to bike to Hood River, you will need to get on I-84 at several points - The shoulder is pretty wide at most places, and it's a good idea to wear some bright orange!

Day 2: Hood River to Maryhill, WA (52.5 miles)
Highlights: The old historic highway section is really neat: it goes through the Mosier Tunnels (now just for ped/bike), The section through Mosier town, and to Rowena's Crest was on low traffic streets. No need to get on I-84 at all all the way to the Dalles.

The crossing over to Washington on the bridge in the Dalles was difficult. It was so windy and the sidewalk so narrow we had to walk. Biking to hwy 14 across the wind was also difficult. But once on hwy 14 heading East, the wind was at our bikes, and we cruised past the Maryhill Museum (Too late in the day to stop!) and stayed at the Maryhill State Park (back down by the river).

Day 3: Maryhill to Crow Butte (58.2 miles)
Highlights: Cruising sometimes 20 miles an hour easily with the wind at our back on Hwy 14. Lovely more deserty scenery, waving to trains. A Stop at Stonehenge.

From the campground, we hitched a ride in a pickup back up the top of the hill to hwy 14. The road was a major truck route, and the shoulder was pretty much missing for the first section of the hill, we decided htiching was the safest option. We enjoyed stopping at America's Stonehenge. I had been there before, but never thought I'd bike all the way! Crow Butte park was father than we thought. We could see it, but then had to ride about 4 miles all the way around and out to it. The RV park was expensive, and did not offer "primitive camper" sites.

Day 4: Crow Butte, WA to Hat Rock Park, OR
Highlights: Early morning hike past deer to the top of Crow Butte. Discovering the way over the I-82 - there is a bike route, but you need to go on the may freeway before the bike route appears, then you exit, cross under and go over on the otherside. Umatilla was nice little town to check out. At first we were excited about the Lewis & Clark Bike/Ped Bath, but it turned into a bad situation.

The wind in the gorge changed from E to W today, so we had to push hard for 20 miles, going about 5-8 miles an hour. Very hard reality after the day before. The road moved away from the Gorge and was now less interesting. Onion (Walla Walla) trucks passed us all day, leaving onion skin trails. We crossed back to Oregon, and instead of the main road decided to follow the Lewis & Clark trail to Hat Rock State Park. Unfortunately it turned into a bad idea. The path was badly marked and kept changing from paved to shared road, to bark-dirt to gravel. After a gravel section we discovered that we had rode through thorns and had 4 flats at once. We pulled out 15-30 thorns and only had two new tubes, One tube needed to be patched 7 times. We were able to ride out to the main road and hitched a ride

Yey! Halfway through the 365 :D

It might seem strange. No, it WILL seem strange. But I've always loved tyre shops. It's something about the smell, and the darkness and the whirr of the air tools. They use those really cool looking tyre forges as well. I don't know why I love them, but I do!

This one is Priory Tyres in Anfield, next door to where I used to work. Priory generally give a good service at a good price, and they tend not to break your car like some gorillas do in tyre shops.

I was picking up a tyre for someone else this time, but I'm sure I'll be due for one myself before long.

It's another mobile shot, as I was out and about and hadn't intended taking a photo here. :)

I had just decided that I would have to make do with the old tractor tyre we put the compost in when my daughter said she had to go to "town"and would I like to go with her! I knew there was a tyre shop with a very creative display so she went passed the shop for me. Well of course its sunday so they were not open. Tried to get a shot through the windows but there were so many reflections I didn't think I had captured anything worth while. But I so enjoyed this shot when I looked at them on the computer!! So abstract!

The Italdesign Giugiaro study of the W12 Coupe, which is systematically oriented towards top performance and high levels of driving dynamics, is the third phase of evolution of two W12 concept cars becomes the fastest cars in the world. The W12 Syncro prototype was first unveiled at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, while the "Roadster", a more advanced version of the W12 Syncro, made its debut at the Volkswagen stand at the 1998 Geneva Motor Show. The final evolution of this sports car project, with its W12 engine inspired by the world of motor sports, was showed at the last Tokyo Motor Show and now is entering the decisive phase of production development. On October 2001 a prototype of Volkswagen's new W12 coupe in the final stages of development set the world speed record for distance covered in 24 hours. The long term development of this project becomes a real partnership between Volkswagen technical and Italdesign Giugiaro staff.The long and flat body of the Coupe, with the restrained styling of the rear spoiler with automatically extends as of 120 km/h, transports the timeless elegance of Volkswagen design into the dynamic sector of the ultimate sports car. Due to the monocoque construction and the location of the longitudinal engine fitted behind the passenger compartment, the front end of the vehicle could be kept extremely flat. With a length of 4.55 metres and at more than 1.92 metres wide, the design study W12 Coupe has a very impressive appearance due to its dimensions alone. This is further underlined by the height of the two-seater vehicle, just 1.1 metres. The design study has been further reflned in comparison to its two predecessors; newly designed headlights and rear lights echo even more strongly the characteristics of the future top class models from Volkswagen. One of the most famous studios in the world is responsible for the design of the vehicle: Italdesign, Giugiaro, Fabrizio Giugiaro, Styling Director,said: " this is one of the most fascinating cars in the world and for sure the fastest and most reliable never built".Smooth leather has been used for the element where the driver has direct access to the function elements - namely the steering wheel. The steering wheel itself is not perfectly round, but is rather extremely similar in form and function to the concepts used in Formula One racing. Alongside the use of leather, the aluminium elements in the interior are particularly noticeable as they have a red sheen and thus correspond to the exterior colour. Volkswagen is using a new chemical procedure to achieve the colouring and surface coating of the unpainted alloy. The layout of the instruments is classic.Two round main displays show the most important information such as speed, revs, fuel tank (100 litres) and engine temperature. A colour display in the centre of the dash panel is used to control the functions of the air conditioning, the navigation system, the on-board computer and the car telephone. Furthermore, the amount of space in the W12 Coupe is extremely comfortable. A generous and ergonomically perfect situation has been realised despite the low level of the vehicle typical of a sports car. There is no doubt - this design study is more than a show car. All the details of the W12 Coupe are fully-functional and the concepts are close to production standards.In the future, all Volkswagens in the upper and luxury classes will be equipped with the high-torque W engines. They are characterised by exceptionally low levels of vibration and the best possible acoustic qualities. They are, depending on the model in question, used as standard- in the W12 Coupe for example - or as an option. The Volkswagen brand will launch them as an eight-cylinder, as can already be seen in the Passat W8, and as a twelve-cylinder version with varying levels of output and set-ups. A 16-cylinder version has also been developed on this basis within the Volkswagen Group.The technology of the twelve cylinder engine integrated in the design study W12 Coupe: with a length of 513 millimetres, a height of 715 millimetres and a width of 710 millimetres, the engine is particularly compact. The capacity of the W12, which weighs just 239 kilograms, is 5,998 cm3. The engine, which is located between the passenger compartment and the rear axle, has an extraordinarily torsionally rigid aluminium crankcase with wear-resistant cylinder sleeves.The enormous power of the engine is transferred to the rear axle via a sequential and thus very fast shiRing six-speed gearbox located behind the engine. This is very favourable for a classic sports car layout. The contact to the road is made via specially developed 19" magnesium wheels with 255/35 ZR front tyres and 275/40 ZR rear tyres. The sophisticated front and rear axle with double wishbone, numerous electronics modules, an ideal weight distribution of nearly 50:50 and an extended wheelbase of 2. 63 metres ensure that the W12 Coupe is both fast and sa

Silcantar Laurevorn





Silcantar Laurevorn is a subcompact front-mid-engine grand touring roadster. No, that's not an oxymoron, not anymore, anyways. It is powered by a Silcantar V8 engine, the same one as in the Valthalion, mounted behind the front axle. However, unlike the Valthalion, its wheelbase is only about 3 times longer than the diameter of its tires. This almost square wheelbase, combined with low center of gravity, low mass, and symmetrical four-wheel steering, makes for very unique handling characteristics. Because of its high power/mass ratio, it is one of the fastest-accelerating cars in the world, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in under four seconds (for comparison, the Bugatti Veyron, with twice as much engine, does it in 2.5s). Due to the fact that it is a convertible and lacks fenders and therefore has less-than-stellar aerodynamics, its top speed doesn't compete well with supercars. Its short wheelbase, however, makes it lighter and more rigid than the average convertible.

Laurevorn, like Valthalion, features Silcantar's signature lack of fenders (Now I have an excuse to be lazy). The seats are located just in front the rear wheels, giving the passengers enough leg room to make any NBA star comfortable for hours-long drives.

By far the most challenging part of building Laurevorn was getting the engine and the transmission between the axles, even though symmetrical 4-wheel steering eliminates the need for a center differential. The transmission is only 8 studs long (the minimum in general and the maximum for this car), with the crankshaft running right through the middle of it. The drive shaft for the front wheels runs through the passenger's right armrest. Mostly by luck and a little bit of skill, it ended up quite elegant, though.
In addition, I have also perfected the Valthalion suspension. Laurevorn has the same low ground clearance, but the suspension is firmer and the shocks no longer get in the way of the steering linkages, which slightly decreased the tightness of Valthalion's turns.

The lines of gray bricks in the picture below are each 32 studs long (2 16-stud Technic bricks) As you can see, both the wheelbase and the width are slightly less than 32 studs.

Creamery Falls at the Woodruff Outdoor Learning Center in Van Hornesville, NY. I suspect the watershed for the falls is small because I took this phot while most of the state of NY was under a flood warning. Still the Woodruff center has three waterfalls on an easy trail system. Just go toward the end of April since there's three feet of snow on the ground in mid-March.
